The Spanish version: a night in a cantina, a bottle, a waiter, and a woman who said no when she meant yes.
«Goodbye» is sung in Spanish and its sister, «Adiós», in English: the crossed titles are deliberate, and each one says goodbye in the other's language.
A whole night in a cantina. A man lies to a bottle — he swears to it that he is better now — asks the waiter for another and tells his story to the man drinking beside him; a couple gets up to dance, and at the end the lights go out.
At its centre is the private language of two people who understood each other without explanations: she would say no when she meant yes, and that «no» was the key to everything. Tu «no» era la llave de todo, y nadie más supo abrir así: that is why one cover carries the key and the other the lock.
Goodbye is the Spanish version, and its cover carries the lock: the woman on the right, facing the gold keyhole. Its hook is a sub-chorus, «Dime que no», and at the change of rhythm the choir fights him over the word. Its music video takes place in a golden hall, in amber tones.
The lyrics are not translated: they are read in the language they are sung in.
Anoche le mentí a una botella:
le juré que ya estaba mejor.
Le hablé de ti hasta que amaneció…
aunque fue una mala decisión.
Me decías que no… y era sí.
Nunca lo dijiste, y lo entendí.
Tu «no» era la llave de todo,
y nadie más supo abrir así.
Me dicen que el tiempo atropella,
me dicen «tomate otra botella».
Y como hay que seguir consejos
para llegar a viejo…
al salonero, de favor,
le pido: ¡otra botella!
Good bye, mi amor. Y es mentira.
Lo digo por los que nos miran.
Dicen que otra vendrá algún día,
que se cura cualquier herida…
Lo dudo, mi amor. Lo dudo:
nadie se parece a ti.
Nadie llena un cuarto como tú.
Y nadie dice que no como tú.
(Good bye) No toda historia termina bien.
(Good bye) No a todo primer beso
le sigue otro beso también… (Good bye)
No pedías permiso. Ni lo pedirías.
Se apagaba la calle, y tú no.
Se dormía la casa, y tú no.
Yo pedía un minuto de tregua…
y tu risa decía que no-no-no.
Me dicen que ya viene otra. (no, no, no)
Amanecía y no te dormías,
con la risa de quien ya ganaba.
Tú llegabas primero. Yo, después.
Y así era como me gustaba.
Tengo un nombre que nadie repite,
un oficio cansado (dígame Licenciado).
Pudiste tener a quien fuera:
No sé si te tratan bien.
No sé a quién le dices que no…
Ojalá él oiga ese sí también.
Hay amores que nunca se acaban;
otros que no debieron empezar.
Y si él nunca aprende a leerte…
con mi voz te puedes consolar.
Good bye, mi amor. Y es mentira.
Lo digo por los que nos miran.
Dicen que diga bye-bye y ya,
que la vida sigue y seguirá…
Lo dudo, mi amor.
Lo dudo…
(Good bye) ¡No toda historia termina bien!
(Good bye) ¡No todo camino va a casa!
(Good bye) ¡Y nadie besa como tú!
¡Dime que no! (¡Dime que no!)
¡Dime que no! (¡Dime que no!)
¡Y me decías que sí!
Que este baile se repita,
sin espacio entre los dos.
Dos ombligos, una cita,
una sola pista de baile… (Good bye)
