The English version of the ballad: the same night in the cantina, the same waiter, the same key.
«Adiós» is sung in English and its sister, «Goodbye», in Spanish: the crossed titles are deliberate, and each one says goodbye in the other's language.
A whole night in a cantina. A man lies to a bottle — he swears to it that he is better now — asks the waiter for another and tells his story to the man drinking beside him; a couple gets up to dance, and at the end the lights go out.
At its centre is the private language of two people who understood each other without explanations: she would say no when she meant yes, and that «no» was the key to everything. Tu «no» era la llave de todo, y nadie más supo abrir así: that is why one cover carries the key and the other the lock.
Adiós is the English version, and its cover carries the key: the woman on the left, in the gold of her dress. In its music video, the garnet-red theatre is washed in a cold violet.
The lyrics are not translated: they are read in the language they are sung in.
Last night I lied to a bottle.
I swore that I was just fine.
I talked about you till the sunrise —
and that was a mistake of mine.
You'd tell me no… and it was yes.
You never told me. I could tell.
That no of yours was the key to it all,
and nobody loved that lock so well.
They say that the years run you over.
They say: "it's time for the second bottle".
Well, a man's got to follow advice
if he plans on ever getting older —
so I look at the waiter and I ask him,
please: one more bottle!
Adiós, my love. And it's a lie.
I say it holding back a cry.
They say that a new one comes along,
that time takes care of everything wrong…
I doubt it, my love. I doubt it:
nobody comes close to you.
Nobody fills a room like you.
And nobody says no like you.
(Adiós) Not every story ends up right.
(Adiós) Not every first kiss
gets a second one that night… (Adiós)
Tell me no. (Tell me no!)
Tell me no. (Tell me no!)
Tell me no the way you know how,
and let me tell you yes again now.
Lady in the street. Beast in the bed.
I was the man; I was the prey…
I'd turn the lights out. You'd turn them on.
You never asked. You'd never ask.
The street would go dark, and you wouldn't.
The house would go quiet, and you wouldn't.
I'd beg you to please slow down…
and your laugh would say no-no-no.
They tell me another is coming. (no, no, no)
They tell me a man can forget.
They don't know one night that you gave me — (no, no, no)
not the kiss, not the dance. Not yet.
Bye-bye, my love. And it's a lie.
I'm never going to forget you.
They say that time will cure and forget,
but your body, that body…
no, no… your body doesn't go.
Nobody comes close to you.
Nobody fills a room like you.
And nobody makes love like you do!
Tell me no! (Tell me yes!)
Tell me no! (Tell me yes!)
Tell me no the way you know how,
and let me tell you yes again now!
(Tell me yes!) And you'd tell me no!
(Tell me yes!) Anything you want, my love!
I told the man drinking beside me
that we all get the same drink poured:
a kid walking out of a schoolyard,
a man standing still in his door,
a king, a beggar, a poor man…
the same woman in a different door.
The sun came up. You wouldn't sleep,
with the laugh of the one who had won.
You'd go first. I'd go after.
And that's how I wanted to get it done.
I've got a name that nobody repeats,
a tired trade I was born to be in.
You could have had anyone breathing —
you looked at me… half lust and half sin.
If there's somebody good to you tonight,
may he wait for you and treat you right.
May he learn the language, and learn it fast,
so I'm not the one you remember at last.
I don't know where you are tonight.
I don't know if they treat you right.
I don't know who you're telling no —
I hope he hears the yes below.
There are loves that never end;
there are some that never should have begun.
And if he never learns to read you…
my voice still knows what you need.
Adiós, my love. And it's a lie.
I say it hoping I'll believe it.
They say: "say adiós and move along,
life goes on and it carries on"…
I doubt it, my love.
I doubt it…
(Adiós) Not every story ends up right!
(Adiós) Not every road leads home!
(Adiós) And nobody kisses like you!
Tell me no! (Tell me no!)
Tell me no! (Tell me no!)
And you'd tell me yes!
Let this dance come back around,
with no space between us two.
Belly to belly, one dance floor,
one date, one night, one me and you… (Adiós)
