Portrait of Larry Hans

Larry Hans

Singer-songwriter · Lawyer · Costa Rica

A Costa Rican lawyer who, without leaving practice, wrote, sang and produced ten songs about the life of Mary. This is the story of how it happened and why it is told this way.

The story

Larry Hans is a Costa Rican singer-songwriter. He is also a practising lawyer, and that second sentence is not a piece of colour: it is the one that explains the album. He lives from the law, not from music, and that allowed him to write La Virgen de Nazaret without the weight of having to make it work. The album's dedication says so without hedging: these songs were not born for a stage, they were born to be prayed.

The album came out on 31 July 2026, whole and all at once, with no advance singles. Ten songs run in an order that cannot be shuffled, because it is not a compilation but a story: it opens with an apparition in an ordinary house in the middle of the night and ends asking for one last companion. The record opens and closes with the same image — the blue mantle: in the first song She comes down to your house; in the last, you are the one asking to go to Hers.

Between those two ends fit a carpenter falling in love as he walked down the village slope carrying timber, a girl fetching water from the river, a young mother crossing the hills of Judea in haste, the cold of Bethlehem, a wedding that ran out of wine, a cross, an empty tomb and an everyday prayer. None of it is told as a pretty scene: each song steps inside it.

One decision holds all ten together, and it is worth pointing out because it is the hardest to do and the least noticed: he never sings as if he were Mary. He always narrates from outside, like someone retelling something he was told and cares too much about. The only time he lends his voice to anyone is the second track, where Joseph speaks. Taking Her voice would have bought intimacy at the price of a licence he was not willing to take.

The same care shows in the theology. Traditions that are not dogma are left as tradition: in Antes del Sí Joachim and Anne appear, Mary's parents according to the Protoevangelium of James, and the Immaculate Conception is left implicit and never proclaimed. Se cumplió la profecía was rewritten expressly so as not to say She was the first to see her risen son — that was Mary Magdalene — but the first to believe. That is the difference between poetic licence and the truth, and the album chose the truth.

The context is not incidental either. Costa Rica has one of the most living Marian devotions in the Americas: every 2 August, more than two million pilgrims walk to the Basilica of Our Lady of the Angels in Cartago. An album like this, written there, is not an oddity: it is what plays in the background of a whole country.

He signs all ten the same way — written, performed and produced by Larry Hans — with no record label behind him. The only lyric that is not his is Ave María, the text the Church has prayed for centuries; for that track he wrote entirely original music, deliberately avoiding the known melodies of Schubert, Gounod or Bach.

Everything released lives at larryhans.com, in eight languages, with the full lyric of every song and a printable sheet for each track. There will be more albums: the discography page is built as an open timeline, waiting for them.

Frequently asked questions

The things people ask most about this page. If something is missing, write to the address in the footer.

Who is Larry Hans?

Larry Hans is a Costa Rican singer-songwriter and a practising lawyer, author of the album «La Virgen de Nazaret» (2026). He writes the words and music of his songs, sings them and produces them. His full legal name is Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas; he signs his work as Larry Hans.

Is Larry Hans a professional musician?

Not full-time. He makes his living practising law, and his time goes first to his profession and his family. Music is a parallel and sustained body of work: he wrote, sang and produced a whole ten-song album without leaving the profession.

How does a lawyer end up recording an album to the Virgin?

Through devotion, not career. The album was not born for a stage but to be prayed, and its dedication says so. It is a work of faith made by someone whose livelihood comes from elsewhere, which let him write it without shaping it to the market.

Where is Larry Hans from?

From Costa Rica, a country with one of the most intense Marian devotions in the Americas: every 2 August, more than two million pilgrims walk to the Basilica of Our Lady of the Angels in Cartago. The album grows out of that cultural context.

What is Larry Hans's real name?

Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas. «Larry Hans» is not an invented pseudonym: those are his two given names, used as a stage name. His full legal name appears in the work's registrations and credits.

What has Larry Hans released?

One album: «La Virgen de Nazaret», released on 31 July 2026, with ten songs and about 59 minutes of music. It is available on Spotify, Apple Music, Deezer, Tidal and Boomplay, and all ten lyrics can be read and downloaded on this site.

What kind of music does he make?

Catholic devotional music with the soul of a classic crooner: nylon-string guitar, orchestral arrangements, solo violin and a voice that narrates scenes rather than preaching. It is neither parish liturgical music nor radio Christian pop.

Does he write the lyrics himself?

Yes, all ten. The only lyric that is not his is «Ave María», the liturgical text the Church has prayed for centuries, in the public domain; for that track he wrote entirely original music, deliberately avoiding the known melodies of Schubert, Gounod or Bach.

Why does he never sing as if he were Mary?

It is a decision sustained across all ten songs: he always narrates from outside, like someone retelling something he was told and cares too much about. Taking Her voice would have bought intimacy at the price of a licence he was not willing to take.

Has the album been checked theologically?

The album carefully distinguishes what the Church defines from what piety preserves. Non-dogmatic traditions, such as the appearance of Joachim and Anne, are left as tradition; and «Se cumplió la profecía» was rewritten to respect that the first to see the risen Christ was Mary Magdalene.

Does Larry Hans play concerts or give interviews?

There is no tour announced. For press enquiries, the press kit on this site gathers biographies, an album description, codes, credits and proposed interview topics. The contact address is soy@larryhans.com.

How can he be contacted?

At soy@larryhans.com. In fairness it is worth warning: in most cases a reply will not be possible, because his time goes to the law and to his family. The commitment that does stand is that every message is read.

Is he on social media?

On Facebook, Instagram, YouTube and TikTok, as Larry Hans. The site larryhans.com is the official home of the complete work: the ten lyrics, the printable sheets, the discography and the press kit, in eight languages.

Who produced the album?

He did. The credit at the foot of all ten lyrics is the same: written, performed and produced by Larry Hans. There is no outside producer and no record label behind it: the work was made and released independently.

Will he keep releasing music?

Yes. The discography page on the site is built as an open timeline, ready to receive whatever albums come and able to announce one before it is out, without pretending it can already be heard.
