Track 7 of 10
Larry Hans
The Cross, told from the Mother who watches.
enseñándoTe a caminar, a hablar, a rezar.
«¿qué pecado has pagado, si no fue nunca tuyo?»
le dijiste: «Mujer… he ahí a tu hijo»…
señalaste a Juan, y a Juan le dijiste: «He ahí a tu Madre»…
¡Aquel viernes…! (aquel viernes…)
…junto a Ella… junto a María…
y junto a Ella… vuelvo a decirTe adiós.

A single page made to be printed: the whole lyric on bone-coloured paper, with a dedication written for this song and Larry Hans's signature. To pray it, to give it away or to keep it — not to read on one more screen.
Download the sheetThe Cross, told from the mother standing there watching. There is no description of the torture and no reproach: there is a woman watching her son die, unable to do anything. The song says she lost him twice, and in the very next line recalls that it was precisely then that He made her the mother of everyone else. The chorus descends in three steps: first the heart broke, then the prayer broke, and at the end the heart stopped. It is the dark centre of the album and the only track with no celebration, no brass and no easy comfort.

About the Cross, told from the mother standing and watching. There is no description of the torture and no reproach: there is a woman who sees her son die and can do nothing. It is the dark centre of the album.
It is the album's most human moment, and it is balanced by the line that follows: «y la hiciste Madre de todos los demás» (and You made her Mother of all the rest). She loses her son on the Cross and loses the exclusivity of being only his mother, in the very instant He gives her to everyone.
It runs 5:34 and is track 7 of the 10 on «La Virgen de Nazaret». Its ISRC is QT6FP2692525. It is the shortest song on the album and, deliberately, its lowest point.
A dominant cello. There is no celebration and no brass here: it is the only track on the record with no ornament, no band and no easy comfort. The arrangement withdraws because the scene admits no accompaniment.
It descends in three steps: «se nos partió el corazón» (our heart broke) → «se nos rompió la oración» (our prayer broke) → «se nos paró el corazón» (our heart stopped). Loss, prayer and death. It is the album's only chorus that worsens instead of growing.
John 19:26-27, when Jesus says to his mother «Woman, behold your son» and to the disciple «Behold your mother». From there comes the line that holds up the whole song: You made her Mother of all the rest.
It is the album's song written for exactly that. It is dedicated to those who have buried a child, and its author says so without ornament: he has no words for that pain and does not pretend to. He only recalls that there was a Mother standing right there, who did not leave.
To those who have buried a child. It is the hardest song on the album according to its own author, and the only one whose dedication admits there are no words enough for the pain it speaks of.
It is the album's Good Friday song, paired with «Se cumplió la profecía» for Easter Sunday. Together, in that order, they cover the passage from death to resurrection without skipping it.
