Track 5 of 10
Larry Hans
The night in Bethlehem — the cold, the straw and the first cry.

Download the sheetIt was cold in Bethlehem and there was no room at any inn. The cradle was dry straw and the roof a stable, where the animals watched without understanding. Mary, young and exhausted, felt the pain coming on; Joseph held her hands each time she broke. Then a cry split the night and the first weeping fell upon the earth. She looked at him for the first time with a mother's eyes. The shepherds arrived with a lamb, a rose and a look. The song closes by saying that every birth repeats, without knowing it, the echo of that night.

About the night of Bethlehem. It was cold, there was no room in any inn and the cradle was dry straw. Mary, young and exhausted, felt the pain advancing; Joseph held her hands each time she broke. Then a cry tore the night and the first weeping came.
Yes, it is the album's Christmas track: it tells the birth from inside the stable. But it is not a carol: there is no pretty scene and no snow, there is a young mother giving birth in the cold and a man holding her hands.
It runs 6:29 and is track 5 of the 10 on «La Virgen de Nazaret». Its ISRC is QT6FP2692523. It is the longest song on the album and the centre of its brighter half.
Middle Eastern percussion — frame drums, tambourines — and angelic trumpets. It is the arrangement that departs furthest from the European sound of the rest of the record, in order to place the scene where it actually happened.
It advances in three steps: «Te miró con tierno encanto» (she looked at You with tender wonder) → «vio en Tus ojitos al Padre Santo» (saw the Holy Father in Your little eyes) → «Te abrazó dentro de Su manto» (held You inside Her mantle). Gaze, recognition and embrace: exactly the sequence of a mother seeing her child for the first time.
It is a conscious decision. Some traditions hold that the birth was painless, but that is not dogma, and it was left in deliberately so that a mother who has given birth can recognise herself in Her. The album prefers closeness to a pretty picture.
The shepherds, with a lamb, a rose and a gaze. The song closes by saying that every birth repeats, without knowing it, the echo of that night: it is the gesture that turns a historical scene into something that keeps happening.
To mothers. To those who gave birth in fear, to those who gave birth alone, to those who spent the whole night watching a cradle without daring to sleep. It is written so that a mother can recognise herself in Her, and not in a pretty picture.
It fits both: it is the album's 25 December track, and its closing line — every birth repeats the echo of that night — makes it natural for a baptism or the birth of a child. For public use it is best to ask at soy@larryhans.com.
