Single 5 of 8
Larry Hans
A-QUI
The commission
Zarza Radio broadcasts in eight languages and commissioned one track for each. The point was not to do the minimum, but to do everything with excellence: that is why these are eight songs that stand on their own, with the same production and the same mastering as anything else this artist has signed. Zarza Radio.
Brazilian, not Lisbon Portuguese. «Tocar» is exactly what a radio does in Brazil («essa rádio toca tudo») and also to touch with your hands: the title caresses. She rhymes in -ou (ligou, voltou, bloqueou, coroou) and the radio in -i. The local closer is a gem: «até a dor sambou» — even the pain sambaed. In a country where pain is danced, that line does the work of a paragraph.
The lyrics stay in the language of the track and are not translated: they are the work.
(Ela se foi e não ligou)
num voo sem volta que nunca retornou;
mudou de país e de idioma pra esquecer a minha voz,
apagou todas as fotos... e me bloqueou!
Diz que não me escuta mais, que a página virou;
botou a rádio em francês... e em francês eu canto — falhou;
liga a rádio em japonês... e me escuta sorrir;
no Rio desce pra praia pra me tirar dali,
e a praia inteira canta: o mundo toca aqui!
oito línguas estudou pra poder me resistir:
zarza ponto com — o mundo toca aqui.
O MUNDO TOCA AQUI! (onde?)
O MUNDO TOCA AQUI! (é aqui!)
Oito idiomas pra ti,
Zarza Radio: o mundo toca aqui.
Eu não fui atrás dela: a rádio a encontrou,
aperte onde apertar... é a minha voz que tocou;
me ligou de madrugada e ninguém atendeu — falhou:
eu tava ao vivo pro planeta... que ela mesma me entregou.
Me trocou pelo mundo inteiro... e o mundo me coroou,
esse hit é minha vergonha: onde ela for, chegou;
INTERNACIONAL! (quem?)
INTERNACIONAL! (ela!)
Foi jantar com outros por aí:
onde toca Zarza Radio... minha Ex…
(AQUI!)
E onde dança ela? (AQUI!)
E onde toca o mundo? (A-QUI!)
(ela sempre foi a mais bela...)
A-QUI... A-QUI... ZARZA RADIO!
A-QUI... A-QUI... O mundo toca aqui!
O MUNDO TOCA AQUI! (onde?)
O MUNDO TOCA AQUI! (é aqui!)
INTERNACIONAL! (ela!)
Zarza Radio: o mundo toca aqui.
Última ligação da noite,
cabine da Zarza Radio,
disse: «tô ligando de Paris...
coloca aquela música... do que não me esquece,
o que canta em oito idiomas?»
Reconheci na hora...
E sabem o que eu fiz? (Play, Play, Play)
Dei o play!
Vai dedicada, meu amor:
zarza ponto com...
o mundo toca aqui!
(e você... já sabia)

Brazilian, and it shows in every line. The vocabulary is from the quebrada — the periphery — with “curtir” and the rhythm of Rio speech. In Lisbon Portuguese the song would exist just the same and would sound like somebody else.
Because in Brazil “tocar” is exactly what a radio does: “essa rádio toca tudo”. And also to touch with your hands, so the title caresses while it plays. It is the same kind of double meaning English found with “play”.
“Até a dor sambou” — even the pain sambaed. In a country where pain is danced, that line does the work of a whole paragraph and sums up the track better than any explanation.
She in -ou (ligou, voltou, bloqueou, coroou) and the radio in -i. The -ou ending is the Brazilian past par excellence: every single thing she did is closed by the sound itself.
Four minutes and fifty-three seconds, registered as Dance like the other seven: they share production, a tempo of 126 and the same structure.
